Kotli Thaan Singh was a village we were led to when we met a young man in Civil Hospital last year. He is a diligent worker from a poor and illiterate family in the village. He washes cars well. He likes to roam around the village helping in odd errands . He is never paid for them. We went on to survey five other villages around this one in February and March 2021.We found such discrimination towards the intellectually disabled was rampant, as in the city. Now we aim to start a sheltered workshop and day centre as well as a social work department in one of these villages. Today, World Disability Awareness Day Dec 3, 2021, we held an awareness camp in the janj ghar of Kotli Thaan Singh. Our manager Rajesh Johar read a poem he wrote and presented the 21 disabilties that are entitled to a government pension as well as free bus and rail travel. Rajan appraised the gathering of our survey and how we want to change the awareness and action landscape here. Parents’ testimonials from current APAAR clients were shown on video as well as our activities in the PIMS branch of APAAR. The underlying theme was – see their ability not their disability. The samosas were delicious and the warmth of the aanganwari ladies touching (Navneet was gifted a shawl ). We made new partners in our journey toward equity for the less able. We have miles to go. And a thousand more partners to make on this very hard journey. Please consider donating generously. www.apaar.org has our NEFT information the moment you open the web page
