Dental caries (cavities from poor preventative check-ups) are a major public health problem identified by the World Health Organisation. Persons with intellectual disabilities have neglected preventative dental health for various reasons. By the time they seek dental care, caries and worse has ensued. Two of APAAR’s clients (G and T) in the last one year have needed dental treatment under general anesthesia as the number of teeth needing treatment was too many. One of them lost 6 teeth and had two root canals and 2-3 dental fillings.
